The podcast for building a responsible and successful business in the reptile community
Breeding reptiles is a dream job for many of us. And there are some people who have been able to make it work enough that that is what they do. Today I talk with Josh Dovenbarger from Phantom Dragons. Josh is one of the top breeders of bearded dragons and shares with us how he built this business, what his life is like, and his advice to anyone who would like to breed reptiles for a living.

A theme that came up a few times in this interview was to do your own thing. This is the cornerstone of being an entrepreneur. It is so important that we will be touching on it from many angles. If you want to be a breeder, actually, if you want to do anything, concentrate on producing the healthiest reptile you can. That never goes out of style. Be patient. It takes years to build up the reputation and the experience that earns you a waiting list to buy everything you can produce. Don’t try and short cut the process. I know it appears easy to memorize everything on social media and feel like you know it all. But breeding reptiles is still deep into being an art. Enjoy building your experience and make the most of your time by gathering information and testing it out. That is how you make it yours. And then, after at least one full generation of raising adults, breeding, hatching, and raising the babies up to adults, you are ready to get your feet in the door. If you don’t try and take the easy route of impressing people when you start then your reputation won’t have to recover when you finally get that experience and are the real deal yourself.
This was a great interview. Josh touched on so many points that hit home for me as a breeder of 10yrs. Everything he said was spot on. I hope a lot of people thinking about breeding reptiles, and those who are already breeding get to hear this episode.
I am glad you enjoyed it. Josh was the perfect one to start the breeder series of talks with!
Awesome talk guys! Super helpful in educating someone considering breeding. A lot of different viewpoints and scenarios were used that help put the whole industry into perspective and not just the small scale of independent breeding. Great discussion!
Thanks, Joey!
